Our team might not be playing that well, but the class stills supports the Tennessee Volunteers. Before the big Florida game, the class took a break from their strenuous educational studies to enjoy games and snacks that were provided by our fantastic parents. Some of the students recorded this fun event with our new Flip video cameras. Take a look at their movie.

Making News

Today, the students were featured in the Knoxville News Sentinel. Thanks to Mrs. Boyd who came in and interview the students. We were all very excited to see the paper this morning. If you missed it, here is the link. There is some negative chatter at the bottom of the page so beware. People have the right to their own opinion. Who really knows if technology is the way of the future for education. All I know is that I am very thankful for the opportunity ORAU has given my students and every morning I come into my class feeling truly blessed!

This year some of the students will be joining the T.B.C. Students are not required to join because most of the work will be after finishing classwork, at home, or during after school Enrichment Club. For those who are taking the challenge, we are 1 week behind so I have pasted the links to week 1 and week 2 challenges.

Students love class pets but they can be a mess. Solve both problems by adding this class pet to your class blog or webpage. Visit aBowman site to get the code for this virtual pet. You can either paste the code in a text widget or paste the code in the HTML. Also, if you have time please feed the hamster.

Rapping in Math

Fractions can be a tedious skill. Continuously going over common factors, simplest form, and other fraction routines, can leave you wanting to quit the problem before you start. That is where Mr. Duey comes in. Mr. Duey is a middle school teacher from Michigan and to inspire his students he raps. Yes, raps. Below is Mr. Duey’s fraction rap video that I played in math this week and the students loved it.

Take a look at his website where you can buy his album. Mr. Duey.

Cartoons + Science = Sciwesome

Go Animate is one of the greatest sites I have ever used in my class. First of all, the site is free. Second, you can make your own cartoons on it. Last, you can embed the cartoon so your friends and family can watch it. So what does this have to do with science. To liven up our lesson on symbiosis, the students created their own symbiotic cartoons. They had to create a cartoon representing one of three symbiosis: mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism. The students had a great time making the cartoons and this week they are going to embed them on their weekly blogs so they can be enjoyed by millions! Below is Sydney’s cartoon. Can you guess what symbiotic relationship she is illustrating?

For this week’s tech buddy lesson, the fifth and second graders made timelines. The students used the website Timetoast.com. During the lesson, the fifth graders showed the second graders their Civil War timelines and then they created one of their lives. The great thing about the website Timetoast is you can embed the timeline after you create one and it’s free! The students will be embed theirs in their weekly blog post. Check out one of the group’s timeline below.

Chatting During a Civil War Video

Everyone likes to talk during a movie. At the same time, no one likes to watch a movie while someone is talking. To solve the problem, the students watched a Civil War movie from United Streaming while “talking” in a chat on the iPad. The students were able to watch and interact with the movie without disrupting the rest of the class. To help monitor the center, I had a parent volunteer, Mrs. Draper, make sure the students stayed on topic and keep it school appropriate. Even though there were some flaws, the students enjoyed chatting during the movie rather than sitting and staring.

The app I used was Chat Lite. This is a free app and only allows a certain number of letters. It also will randomly kick you out of the chat. This center would of worked great if I could find a dependable back channel to use. If you have any ideas please leave a comment. It would be greatly appreciated.

Old Mr. Haney Had A Farm

Well, the goal is to have a farm. But with no previous farming experience, I will take anything that grows out of the ground. For the last three weeks, the students and I have been maintain two 8 x 3 x 3 feet garden boxes that my dad built. The “farming” has been a lot of fun and the students seem to enjoy it. Everything has been going great until yesterday when the INVASION OF CABBAGE WORMS hit the farm! We picked about 50 worms off of the plants and I bought some spray that is supposed to take care of the problem. Hopefully in a couple of weeks/months will have some food for the work. Below is a video of one of the students holding the worms. If you would like to see more, take a look at our garden wikis on the sidebar and check out week 3.
